Prep your own fiber

In this full-day class you'll discover and have the chance to experiment with lots of ways to prepare your own fiber for spinning. You'll learn how to use flick cards, hand cards, hand-held and stationary combs, drum carders, and blending boards, with an emphasis on safety and good technique. We'll also discuss which prep methods work best for which fibers, and how best to prepare your fibers to make a specific kind of finished yarn.

We'll provide a variety of tools for you to use in class, as well as appropriate fibers.

This class is appropriate for beginning through intermediate spinners; you should be able to spin a continuous thread on your wheel. We'll be spinning as we prep, so bring a spinning wheel in good working order, three bobbins, and a lazy kate. As well, bring any portable prep tools you already have.

Taught by Sasha Torres. Enrollment limited to five students. $99 including materials.

Spinning consistent yarns

Want to spin more consistent skeins?

Do you want to make yarns that are consistent in diameter and twist? This half-day class will help you do just that.

You'll explore the two keys to a beautifully even skein of handspun—consistent drafting and even twist—and learn tips and tricks for achieving both. We'll cover:

  • sampling to choose the diameter and twist you want in your finished yarn
  • how to draft consistently and adjust your drafting on the fly to achieve consistent diameter
  • maintaining even twist through a project
  • how to troubleshoot your spinning, make changes, and get back on track when your drafting varies
  • plying for consistency
  • how to deal with twist problems—even after you're done spinning and plying a skein

This class is appropriate for beginning through intermediate spinners; you should be able to spin a continuous thread on your wheel with confidence. Bring a spinning wheel in good working order, three bobbins, and a lazy kate.

Taught by Sasha Torres. Enrollment limited to seven students. $59 including materials and GST.

Drafting methods

Do you want more control over the look and feel of your finished yarn?

Does the yarn you're actually spinning match the yarn you dreamed of when you first saw the fiber? How you draft your fiber determines a great deal about what your finished yarn looks and feels like. In this half-day class, you'll learn and have the opportunity to practice a number of drafting methods, including short forward draw, short backward draw, supported long draw, and spinning from the fold. In addition, you'll learn how to choose a draft that will produce the specific yarn you want for the project you have in mind.

This class is appropriate for beginning through intermediate spinners; you should be able to spin a continuous thread on your wheel. Bring a spinning wheel in good working order, three bobbins, and a lazy kate.

Taught by Sasha Torres. Class limited to five students. $59, including materials and GST.
